A Rwandan coffee company, Nova Coffee Ltd, has experienced a significant coffee demand following an online competition and auction, which occurred in 2024.
According to a report by The News Times, the Gicumbi-based coffee company said that its company has experienced a high demand from prospective buyers since its 2024 online auction.
In 2024, the Nova Coffee led by Agnes Mukamushinja, made headlines when its specialty green coffee fetched $71.8 per kilogramme, 14 times the global average at the inaugural Best of Rwanda Specialty Coffee Competition. The sale, confirmed by the National Agricultural Export Development Board (NAEB), marked a milestone in Rwanda’s coffee history.
A year later, the momentum has only intensified. On October 8, 2025, a batch from K Organics Ltd in Huye District shattered that record, selling for $88.18 per kilogramme during the second edition of the same competition. The auction generated more than $304,000 from 11,210 kilograms of coffee, nearly doubling the previous year’s total. Buyers came from markets as diverse as the US, France, Japan, Saudi Arabia, and South Korea.
For Evariste Karangwa of K Organics Ltd, the recognition is deeply meaningful. “This achievement reflects our dedication to quality and gives us the opportunity to reinvest in our farms, improving both our coffee and community livelihoods,” he said.
NAEB Chief Operations Officer, Sandrine Urujeni, commended the producers for their exceptional standards, noting that Rwanda is setting new benchmarks. “We are raising the bar high; our next goal is to reach $100 per kilo,” she affirmed, urging continued collaboration across the coffee value chain.
Oreste Baragahorana, Chairperson of the Coffee Exporters and Processors Association of Rwanda (CEPAR), emphasized that the competition and auctions are vital marketing tools. “They showcase Rwanda’s coffee globally and motivate farmers to produce more and better quality,” he said.
Under Rwanda’s Strategic Plan for Agricultural Transformation (PSTA 5), the country aims to raise annual coffee export revenues from $78.7 million in 2023/24 to $115.5 million by 2029 a goal increasingly within reach as Rwanda’s specialty coffee captures global acclaim.
