South African businesses are set to deepen trade ties with Algeria and the wider continent following a strong showing at the recently concluded Intra-Africa Trade Fair (IATF) 2025, held in Algiers from 4–10 September.
The 30-member delegation, part of the official South African Pavilion, generated hundreds of promising leads, underscoring the growing opportunities under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
Swatek Defence and Aerospace announced the signing of three memoranda of understanding to establish distribution channels in Algeria. Chief Executive Officer, Dr Khulile Mtsetfwa, revealed that the company had also secured a R20 million contract to supply protective gear. “Our mission was to expose our products to as many markets as possible across the continent. Building long-term relationships with local partners is key to that vision,” he said.
Similarly, Zilon Bulk Bags reported significant interest in its polypropylene bulk bags. Director Rashmee Ramdeen confirmed negotiations on a potential R6 million order, noting that Algeria’s reliance on European imports offered South African firms a competitive edge. “The demand here is huge, and this creates a unique opportunity for us to expand into North Africa,” she said.
According to the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition, the South African Pavilion attracted more than 3,000 visitors and 267 buyers, generated around 300 leads worth an estimated R483 million in potential sales over the next six months, and hosted over 120 business-to-business meetings.
Chief Director of Export and Marketing, Zanele Sanni, described the IATF as a “powerful platform for driving intra-African trade and investment”, particularly in sectors such as energy, automotive, mining, and technology.
The results signal a renewed momentum in Africa’s trade integration efforts and highlight Algeria’s growing role as a gateway to continental markets.
