Walmart, the largest retail chain in the United States, has announced plans to open its first African branch in South Africa this October.

The move marks a significant milestone in the company’s global expansion strategy and signals a direct entry into the continent’s fast-growing retail market.

In partnership with leading regional retailer Shoprite, Walmart’s new operations aim to bring affordable, high-quality merchandise to African consumers.

The company revealed that it has already recruited a network of small and medium-sized African-based suppliers to support the rollout.
“This strategic move underscores Walmart’s commitment to making high-quality, affordable merchandise accessible to more customers,” the company said in a statement.

Kath McLay, Walmart President and CEO, confirmed that the South African stores will offer a broad range of goods including fresh groceries, household essentials, apparel, and technology products.

“Walmart will also offer a variety of locally sourced products. By partnering with South African suppliers and entrepreneurs, we aim to bring our signature everyday low prices and global standards to the market while celebrating the country’s rich culture,” McLay added.

Several store sites are currently under development, with official opening dates scheduled for October. The entry builds on Walmart’s existing African presence through Massmart, which owns the Makro and Game retail chains, as well as Builders Warehouse, a building materials supplier.

With this launch, Walmart looks set to shake up South Africa’s retail landscape, promising greater competition, new opportunities for local suppliers, and a wider range of affordable goods for consumers.
