M-PESA Ethiopia has launched a prepaid electricity payment service that allows customers using Ethiopian Electric Utility Smart Meters to purchase electricity directly through the M-PESA Super App.

The service is designed to make electricity top-ups more convenient by removing the need for customers to visit Ethiopian Electric Utility service centres. Users can now buy electricity remotely at any time, provided they have updated the M-PESA Super App to its latest version.

To access the service, customers must open the app, select Pay with M-PESA, choose Pay Utility, and then tap Ethiopian Electric Utility (Prepaid). They will then be required to enter their Contract Account Number.

Customers can complete their purchase by entering the amount they wish to pay in Ethiopian Birr or by selecting the quantity of electricity required in kilowatt-hours. After the transaction is confirmed, the app immediately generates a 20-digit electricity token, which the customer can enter into the Smart Meter to activate the purchased units.

The introduction of the service expands M-PESA Ethiopia’s range of digital financial solutions for routine household payments. It also provides customers with a faster and more flexible way to access an essential utility without being restricted by service-centre opening hours.

The move reflects the continued growth of mobile-based payment services in Ethiopia, where financial technology providers are increasingly integrating utilities and other essential transactions into digital platforms.

By adding prepaid electricity payments to its Super App, M-PESA Ethiopia is seeking to simplify everyday financial activities while improving access to secure and convenient payment channels.

The new feature also strengthens the company’s wider digital payments ecosystem by bringing another essential public service directly to customers through their mobile devices.
