POSCO International has officially commenced development of a large-scale graphite mine in Tanzania, marking a significant step in the company’s strategy to secure key raw materials for electric vehicle (EV) batteries and enhance the resilience of global mineral supply chains.

The groundbreaking ceremony took place on October 9 at the Mahenge Mine in Ulanga, Morogoro Region, drawing over 100 participants, including Kim Dae-young, POSCO International’s Regional Director for South Africa; Anthony Mabunde, Tanzania’s Minister of Mineral Affairs; John De Vries, CEO of BlackRock Mining; and Ahn Eun-joo, Tanzania’s Ambassador to South Korea.

With estimated reserves of six million tons, Mahenge is the world’s second-largest graphite deposit. The project is being spearheaded by Australia-based BlackRock Mining, with POSCO Group participating as a strategic partner. Development of the mine aligns with the broader Mineral Security Partnership (MSP) a global initiative involving South Korea, the United States, Japan, and the European Union aimed at securing sustainable supplies of critical minerals.

When commercial operations begin in 2028, POSCO International is expected to receive a steady annual supply of 60,000 tons of natural graphite for approximately 25 years. The material is vital for the production of anodes used in lithium-ion batteries a cornerstone of the global EV industry.
As the global demand for electric vehicles accelerates, graphite has emerged as one of the most sought-after critical minerals. Currently, China accounts for more than 70% of global graphite production, raising concerns over supply chain concentration. By investing in Tanzania, POSCO aims to diversify sourcing and contribute to a more balanced global supply network.

The Mahenge project also underscores Africa’s rising importance in the global clean energy economy, offering new opportunities for investment, infrastructure development, and strategic partnerships across the continent’s mining sector.
“This investment reinforces POSCO’s commitment to securing critical raw materials for the clean energy transition while supporting sustainable development in Africa,” said a company representative.

As the race for EV battery materials intensifies, Tanzania’s expanding resource sector could play a pivotal role in reshaping the global supply landscape positioning Africa as a key partner in the next phase of industrial and energy transformation.
