The Federal Government has launched the National Soybean Production and Expansion Policy and Strategy to unlock ₦3.9 trillion in annual industry revenue and create one million jobs across 22 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
Unveiled in Abuja by Agriculture and Food Security Minister Abubakar Kyari in partnership with Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia, the strategy targets one million hectares of cultivation and 460,000 metric tonnes of soybean grains within two years. Kyari described it as a key pillar of the Renewed Hope Agenda to diversify the economy and achieve food sovereignty.
Nigeria currently produces 1.35 million metric tonnes of soybeans annually against a demand of 2.7 million tonnes, driven by the food, feed, and industrial sectors. Kyari said the new policy provides a blueprint to boost output, add value, and expand domestic and export markets.
Governor Alia pledged Benue’s leadership in meeting the targets, committing to double the state’s production from 202,000 to at least 400,000 metric tonnes in three years. He noted Benue’s long-standing dominance in soybean cultivation since the 1930s, supported by fertile land and a strong farming tradition.
The government said the strategy will strengthen Nigeria’s agri-industrial base, bridge the supply gap, and position the country as a leading soybean producer in Sub-Saharan Africa.
